Sturkie Family History

"The graves of Captain and Mrs. Ewing were the first ones in the Luker Cemetery. No vital statistics were kept at that date in Comanche County. So we do not know whether Captain or Mrs. Ewing died first. The graves were placed on the land belonging to Captain Ewing. There is no record that he ever dedicated the land for cemetery use. In a few years the land became the property of Uncle John Luker, his son-in-law. Uncle John then set aside the land for cemetery purposes. So through the years the Luker families have buried their dead in this private cemetery. Two of the Ewing children are buried there beside their parents. Grannie Hale and two of her children lie at rest there.

In the early 1900's Grandma Luker collected donations from the Luker relatives to have the cemetery fenced, for the graves were in the pasture and stock grazed about them. As time went on the fence fell into decay. More recently, John Luker, grandson of Uncle John Luker and great grand-son of Captain and Mrs. Ewing secured a deed to the land for cemetery purposes. He erected a cyclone fence around the plot, put a nice metal name-plate over the double-gate entrance. He cleaned the brush and shrubbery from all the graves and placed a marker at each grave. Mama' oldest brother, Frank, identified a number of the graves for him. Uncle Frank had lived nearby and was well acquainted with the burials there. As a matter of fact, five of his children were buried there at that time. Today, the Luker Cemetery Association, made up of Luker relatives, maintains the cemetery. The relatives owe a deep debt of gratitude to John for his financial contribution and interest in maintenance of this sacred spot."

The Luker Cemetery is a lovely old country cemetery. Accessed by a winding, tree- canopied dirt lane, it is across the road from a creek. The graveyard has few trees, a couple or three old live oaks in one corner, and is mostly grass covered. A fence surrounds the cemetery. Old stones lay against the fence like remnants of days gone by. Confederate Flags adorn the graves of John Wade Luker and Capt. David Ewing.
