The eldest son of Richard Benjamin Sturkie and Jerushia Hoover Sturkie, Benjamin Joshua Sturkie, along with his wife Margaret Alta E. Sturkie and two boys, left Lexington, SC in a homemade covered wagon to make the trek to Texas. (The tintypes above were probably taken in South Carolina.)
