67. Benjamin Lewis Sturkey (Starkey). Born on 10 Jan 1810 in South Carolina. Benjamin Lewis died in Nocona, Montague County, Texas on 13 Mar 1886; he was 76. Buried in Starkey Cemetery, Starkey, Montague CO, TX.

Information on Benjamin Lewis Sturkey/Starkey furnished by Gerald Roden of duncan, Oklahoma, the great-great grandson of Benjamin Lewis. Gerald says his research indicates that Benjamin Lewis was born in Orangeburg, SC and that the name was Sturkey. On the 1850 Choctaw County, Mississippi, census the name was still Sturkey. But after moving to Texas in 1860 there was confusion with a Benjamin Sturkie, so Benjamin Lewis Sturkey changed his name to "Starkey." This information on Benjamin Lewis Sturkey from Gerald Roden does correspond to the family legend of the South Carolina sturkey family. Gerald had no knowledge of the other south Carolina Sturkeys until he contacted this researcher in 1999 after he had completed his research. the wife of Benjamin Lewis may have been Margaret Casstevens, who was born Jan. 9, 1808, probably in Georgia. A marriage document has not been found. Two elderly Starkey descendants (now deceased) had differing recollections of Margaret's maiden name.7

Benjamin and wife Margaret came to Johnson County (now Hood Count) in 1856, when their son Napoleon was about 16. he was a slaveholder in Georia before the Civil War, and later a farmer in Texas.9

In 1836 when Benjamin Lewis was 25, he married Margaret S. Langston, in probably Georgia. Born on 19 Jan 1808 in Georgia. Margaret S. died in Montague County, Texas on 4 Apr 1886; she was 78.

On 25 Oct 1835 when Jefferson was 23, he first married Lucy Self. Born on 20 Apr 1820 in Edgefield, South Carolina. Lucy died in McCormick Co, SC on 9 Jul 1862; she was 42.

On 15 May 1864 when Jefferson was 52, he third married Mary Albea. Born on 29 Jan 1836 in Lincoln County, GA. Mary died in Lincoln County, GA on 29 Jan 1908; she was 72.
