CALVIN R. STURKIE . .
.
St. Matthews, Feb. 18. - from near Swansea, one of the oldest and most intelligent farmers of Lexington county, died on Monday morning . . He was 78 . . . He was the father of Dr. D. R. Sturkie, member of the house of representatives of South Carolina from Calhoun County.  He was a Confederate soldier, having served . . throughout the four years, in Co. H, Twentieth S.C. Regt., under Capt. S.M. Roof.  He is survived by his wife and several children, four sons and three daughters:  they are Dr. L.K. Sturkie of Orangeburg, Dr. D.R. Sturkie of Calhoun County, O.S. Sturkie of Swansea, T.C. Sturkie, a prominent member of the Lexington bar; Mrs. Henry W. Neese , Mrs. W. Pope Jeffcoat and Mrs. M. L. Rister. .  He is also survived by two brothers, J. Frank Sturkie and Edwin Sturkie, both of Lexington county. 

Mr. Sturkie was a leading member of the New Hope Baptist church. His body was laid to rest in the cemetery at New Hope at noon yesterday in the presence of one of the largest congregtions ever assembled in that section. The Rev. N. N. Burton of Batesburg conducting the services.

In the death of Mr. Sturkie Lexington county has lost one of her best citizens.

Clavin served along side of his brothers, PVT Wesley J Sturkey and PVT Daniel Artemus Sturkie, in 20th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, Company H.

20th Infantry Regiment was orgaanized at Orangeburg, South Carolina, during the winter of 1861-1862. Many of the men were recuirted in Sumter, Orangeburg, and Calhoun counties. For some time the unit served in the Charleston area attached to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. In the spring of 1864 it moved to Virginia and was assigned to General Kershaw's, Kennedy's, and Conner's Brigade. The 20th participated in the Battle of Cold Harbor, saw action in the Shenandoah Valley with Early, and ended the war in North Carolina. On Morris Island from July 10 to September 6, 1863, it lost 9 killed and 24 wounded. During this time on August 29, the regiment reported 24 officers and 283 men present for duty. At the Battle of Bentonville it sustained 7 casualties and on March 23, 1865, totalled 243 effectives. They surrendered on April 26. The field officers were Colonels Stephen M. Boykin and Laurence M. Keitt, Lieutenant Colonels Olin M. Dantzler and Paul A. McMichael. And Majors Mimms and John M. Partlow.
