Ancestral File #: FNR7-JW
Richard Powell’s birth in 1645 is shown by the fact that he was for he first time on a jury in 1666, and that in Feb., 1666/7 it was ordered that Wm Ellis deliver to Richard Powell what land belongs to him (Book “E”, part 2, Order page 11a).

On Feb 19, 1672 Edward Marlo sued Richard Powell.

He died before June 16, 1673, on which date Susannah Powell was granted administration on Richard Powell, deceased. (same, page 94). His inventory was handed in by Susannah Powell, August 15, 1673 (Book “E”, page 153.

Susannah married John Powell, Richard’s youngest brother, who died 1688 and in the same year she married Roger Bryant, Sr.

The names of Richard’s and Susannah’s four children: Richard, John, William and Elizabeth, are proved from the wills of her second husband, John Powell and her father William Clements. The ages of the three sons are shown rather definitely by the following:

(1) On Jan 17, 1688, as mentioned previously, Richard Powell, lawful eldest son of Richard Powell, deceased, deed to his uncle, Wm Powell No. 3 the 300 acres that had been granted to his father Jan. 28, 1663/4. On March 19, 1688/9 Richard Powell sued Mary Clements, widow of his grandfather, William Clements, for his legacy from the grandfather and was ordered to receive it (Book 5, Part 2, Orders, unpaginated). These two records show that Richard was just of age, so born 1667 or very early in 1668.

(2) On Jan. 17, 1691/2 John Southerland sued the estate of John Powell, deceased, for a cow left to his wife by her grandfather, Wm Clements, and Roger Briant, who married the relict of Powell, was ordered to turn over the cow. This shows that the daughter, Elizabeth, was married by early 1692. She may have been born about 1669 (Book 5, Part 2, Orders, unpag.).

(3) On March 17, 1691/2 John Powell sued Roger Briant, who married the relict of Richard Powell, deceased, for his property, and it is stated that “he is now of full age”

(4) The Same Book 5, Part 2, shows that at Orphans Ct. May 15, 1694, Richard Lawrence was ordered to deliver to John Southerland, in right of his wife Elizabeth, the legacy left her by her grandfather, Wm Clements; and he was ordered at the same court to deliver their legacies to Wm, John and Richard. Wm Powell was obviously of age, so born about 1673.261
