Census notes for Mary Delilah (Spouse 1)
It is not certain that the Delilah married to Jacob H. Pearson was a Sturkie, but there is circumstantial evidence that she possibly was. Presuming she was a Sturkie, here’s what we know about her:
Delilah Sturkie was born 02 May 1815 in Orangeburgh District, SC, and died 16 Aug 1901 in Orangeburg County, SC, buried at Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Orangeburg County, SC. She is said to have married Jacob H. Pearson, who is said to be the son of Jesse Pearson and Anna McMichael. He was born about 1800 in Orangeburgh District, SC.
Delilah’s parents have not been identified. As discussed below, several family stories indicate she was the sister of Andrew Sturkie. Andrew was probably the son of 1782 John, and a brother to Richard and Gabriel.
Richard Bolin has been kind enough to share his research on Andrew Sturkie. Richard’s Uncle Michael Martin Bolin, son of Floretta Sturkie Bolin (Andrew’s daughter), wrote his personal family history which contains much detail about Andrew and his daughters. Uncle Mike’s information came to him from his mother Floretta. One problem is that Floretta did not live with her father Andrew when she was growing up and one has to wonder how much she really knew about her father and his siblings.
Uncle Mike Bolin stated that Andrew had three sisters: Delilah (Pearson), Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Moorer), and Katherine (Martin). The family story from Uncle Mike Bolin does not name any brothers for Andrew and it has long been assumed that if Andrew had any brothers Uncle Mike would have said so. However, as research has continued, it appears that Uncle Mike simply neglected to name Andrew’s brothers, or he was not aware of who they were. It also appears that Andrew may have had more than the three sisters named by Uncle Mike.
A detailed analysis of the census records and other documents pertaining to the Sturkie family does not identify any household with only one son and 3 or more daughters. It simply was not possible to fit Andrew into any one of the Sturkie households based on this criteria, leading to the suspicion that Uncle Mike did not have all the information on Andrew and his siblings. See detailed discussion in the chapter on Andrew Sturkie beginning on page 130.
From William Albergotti November 26, 2005: “Andrew Sturkie had a sister who lived near Orangeburg, SC just west of the North Edisto River [fits Two Mile Swamp area]. The sister was Mrs. Pearson. After Jane Boles Sturkie’s death, say in 1859, Andrew Sturkie to care for Lodoskie, placed her with his sister, Mrs. Pearson. When he went to see Lodoskie (a very many mile walk) he found that Mrs. Pearson without his permission had cut Lodoskie’s hair. He removed Lodoskie from Mrs. Pearson’s and he and Lodoskie, about nine years old, walked home to Pelion. Later Lodoski went to live in the ‘Cousin Dave Gleaton’ household (cousin to the Argoes) where she lived in a status between that of a member of the family and a servant girl. ‘Cousin David Gleaton’ was probably a first cousin of Andrew Durant Argoe whose mother was born Sarah (Sally) Gleaton.”
Uncle Michael Martin Bolin’s personal history: “ . . . Lodoski went to live with her aunt Lizzie in Columbia for a while [not in Bill Albergotti’s version], then to Dave Gleaton’s household, and Floretta [Lodoski’s sister] went to live with the Martin Bolin family.” Uncle Mike also states “He [Andrew] had three sisters, Lizzie Moorer, Katherine Martin and Lila Pearson.”
However there is this: Margaret Waters 7/29/2011 email to Patricia Sturkey: I've been sitting here abstracting some Orangeburg County deeds. On March 18, 1848 John Pearson, et al did a trust deed to Jacob H. Pearson for land on Great Branch (in the Forks area). The et al included 8 other folks when all of the wives were included. The deed is quite long and has eight witnesses, one of whom was G. N. Sterkie. Most of the witnesses proved the deed (rather than just one doing so). N. G.[sic] Sterkie proved the deed in Lexington District on March 8, 1849. I suppose now we might have to figure out what connection he had with all these Pearson folks!
