Obituary/DC notes for John J. MARTIN
Lexington County Death Certificate #1151.6
Census notes for Martha E. (Spouse 1)
{Mary,
Here's a curve ball for you . . . . see attached.
Now, this Martha A. [Sturkie] Martin who died July 12, 1918 is NOT the Martha E. Sturkie who is shown on the 1850 census in John Sturkie's household. Martha E. Sturkie married John J. Martin . Martha E. died February 12, 1890; she and her husband John J. Martin are buried at the Martin Family Cemetery in Lexington County, SC.
I have long suspected that Martha E. Sturkie was not the daughter of John and do not show her as one of his children. I am inclined to think she was probably John's niece - daughter of John's older brother Henry.
I have found a Garret Jordan on the 1800 census for Lexington, Orangeburg District . . . born 1756-1774. Garret Jordan was right up there in the Lexington area with all the Jeffcoats in 1800 (Samuel, Richard, John, Daniel, Jacob). SCDAH has a number of documents 1811-1816 pertaining to this same area, showing Garret Jordan's name.
There was also a John Jordan born 1766-1784, on the 1810 census in the same area. He was probably a son of Garret.
John Sturkie's wife Martha was born about 1781. Hmmmmm Maybe John Jordan's sister???
I do not show John Sturkie's wife Martha as a Rickenbacker as I have been unable to find any source for this. Jim Rickenbacker is the OGSGS expert on the Rickenbacker family and he has no evidence of a Martha Rickenbacker (which is not unusual since most females in that time period are unknown). However, having been told years ago by some Sturkie researcher whose name he does not remember (Wilson O. Shealy???) that Martha was a Rickenbacker, Jim is showing Martha as a Rickenbacker on his web site.
This Death Certificate for Martha A. Sturkie Martin is a little shakey because there is no informant identified, but I think it should give us more reason to NOT show John Sturkie's wife as a Rickenbacker.
