Notes for John Oliver (Spouse 1)
Information on John Oliver Martin is from
Mary Etheridge Walker
Attachment lists the nine children of John Oliver Martin and Mary Sarah Hoover. I have this from two sources: (1) Lexington Co. 1850 Census, Annotated (2) Letters written to my Aunt Annie Laurie Etheredge from our cousin Tessica Martin outlining her research in the 1960s during which she actually visited and interviewed Martin and other family members living in Lexington Co. The two sources match with regard to the children's names. The youngest of the nine children, William Noah Martin b. 1839, was my great grandfather.
Tessica was working on a theory that Solomon Martin was the father of John Oliver Martin. I never heard whether she proved it or not. My grandmother, Mary Belle Martin Etheredge (born 1871) told Tessica that the Martins came down from North Carolina. Tessica traced a Solomon who appeared in NC on the 1790 and 1800 censuses. He first appeared in Lexington Co. in 1820. A family Bible that Aunt Annie Laurie kept, listed Solomon's wife's name as "Mary E. Martin." Martin was probably her married name. Her married name is unknown. My cousin (daughter of Annie Laurie) and I think that Annie Laurie probably filled out the family page in the Bible based on information she got from cousin Tessica Martin. This Solomon Martin probably died before 1830. In 1830, the census lists a Mary Martin as head of household. She lives next door to John Hoover. In 1820 John Hoover had been a neighbor of Solomon Martin. In 1830 there was also a John Martin and an Oliver Martin living fairly close to this Mary Martin and John Hoover. I believe they are John Oliver Martin who married Mary Sarah Hoover and William Oliver Martin who married Martha Ann "Patsy" Jeffcoat. I think the two are brothers (sons of Solomon Martin and Mary E. ____). Both John Oliver and William Oliver had sons born in 1839 and seem to have died around that same time. Their wives appear as heads of household on the 1840 census. The widows Patsy Martin lives next to Mary Hoover (McGillivray?) and the widow Mary Martin lives close by and next door to Erasmus Horsey. Her son, William Noah Martin, married Annie E. Horsey, granddaughter of Erasmus. William Noah Martin and wife, Annie E. appear on the 1880 census. William Noah says his father (John Oliver Martin) was born in SC. If this is true and if we believe that Solomon Martin was John Oliver Martin's father, then John Oliver would have to have been born after 1800. Solomon last appeared on the NC census in 1800. By 1810 he was in Orangeburg Co., living near Jeffcoat, Livingston, and Mack families. The Jeffcoat family info on
Ancestry.com shows 1783 as John Oliver Martin's birthday. I would love to know what source they have for this. I don't think it is correct.
I have been searching census records for the last three months trying to solve the Martin, Hoover, and McGillivray riddles. Mostly all I've come up with are theories. I welcome your thoughts. The next e-mail I send, will discuss my facts and theories about the children of John Hoover and his wife Mary (McGillivray?.
Cheers!
Mary E. Walker}
From what I can tell, Jerusha, Mary, and Mary Sarah may have had a younger brother named John, born ca. 1813/14, who married Elizabeth Rister. They appear on the 1850 census for Lexington Co. My cousin Tessica interviewed (in 1967) a Lillie Mae Branham, who lived on land that was part of the above mentioned land grant. She claimed to be the granddaughter of Lewis (or Louis) Hoover, who was a brother of Mary Sarah Hoover. I do not have a birth date for Lewis Hoover, nor can I find him in the census. Jerusha was born ca. 1785 which would make her 28 years senior to John. If Jerusha, Mary, Mary Sarah, Lewis, and John were all born to the same mother, then Lewis must be somewhere in the middle (given a woman's biological clock). For now, I am listing him as the 4th child even though I do not have a year of birth for him.
Notes for John Oliver (Spouse 1)
Soloman Martin is not proven as the father of John Oliver Martin at this time.
