1836 - 1879
An edited typed transcription from microfilm from Baptist Church Records, Nashville, TN, was presented to the Choctaw CO Public Library by James M. Steinwinder of Gautier, Mississippi in 1995. Transcription was by Carolyn Pearson Franklin.

Transcript shows James B. Luker, Elizabeth Luker, and Jim Luker to be members of the church.

Also: Bro. James Luker attached himself to the "Methodist Society"in 1852.
Notes for James Burette (Spouse 1)
James B. Luker was overseer of the slaves for his father-in-law for a time. As a child he was impressed with the hard lot of the slaves, their many abuses and beatings. He resigned his work as overseer and moved his family to Choctaw CO.146

“This refers to the weekly rations for a Negro on the plantations. Grandfather Smith issued these as overseer on the Lucy plantation. It was three and one-half pounds of bacon and a peck of meal a week to each slave, with addition of homemade molasses and vegetable grown on the place.“

“As the son of a yeoman he smacked more of the soil than the children born in the plantation mansions. He played around the cabins perhaps more freely.”37
