Family Story notes for James Burette LUKER
Geo W. Luker claimed he was the seventh son in succession in his family. We do not know the names of the four brothers who must have died in infancy. As further evidence that James B. Luker fathered four more sons by this first wife, a letter from a descendant of his third wife states that James B. Luker was the father of seventeen children.

Notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
James B. Luker, our great grandfather, married Elizabeth Edwards who was born in Alabama. We know nothing about her family except that she had a brother Jesse Edwards who lived in another county near Choctaw County. Jesse Edwards owned a large plantation on which he worked many slaves. Grandpa Luker always referred to him as “Uncle Jess Edderds”. James B. Luker was overseer of the slaves for his brother-in-law for a time.

I have been looking into some. I will tell you some of what I know. According to the census records, there were two Stephen Edwards living in Wilcox county in 1840. One of them lived near a Joseph Edwards, who I think is his brother. In the 1850 census, this particular Stephen Edwards had moved to Choctaw county Alabama as well as his brother Joseph. His wife in the census records is Catherine. Now we know that Stephen died in 1864, although I don't know where he is buried, but in the 1880 Lauderdale county census a Katey Edwards was living with Sarah and Hiram Brewster and she was listed as the mother-in-law. I am making an assumption that Francis Smith and Catherine Edwards were the same person and that her whole name was Francis Catherine Smith. I have found some information that other people have put on the internet of someone named Jarrott Edwards whose father was Joseph Edwards of North Carolina. Jarrott Edwards supposedly had several children with two wives, but two of the sons were name Joseph Edwards and Stephen Edwards and they were born in South Carolina. All of this is kind of sketchy, but if you have found any information, just email me at

Notes for Marth (Spouse 3)
“James B. Luker, the father, again took a wife. She was temperamental and kept the family in pretty much of an uproar. By this wife, he fathered a son, Joshua, daughters George Ann and Alice. Some accounts are that there were also twins; but mama does not remember that Grandpa ever spoke of them.”
148“James B. Luker died shortly after George W. enlisted...The stepmother with the three (or five) children had a most difficult time. Grandpa did what he could to help support her and his half brother and sisters. After his marriage in 1867, he and his wife gave George Ann and Alice a home. From some accounts it seems that John Wade Luker, Grandpa’s older brother, gave Joshua a home. The mother left her children with these relatives and went to Mobile to find work.”
