Obituary/DC notes for John Benjamin Franklin COOK
Both John Benjamine Franklin and Elizabeth are buried at the Lytle Cemetery, plot no. 141, Lytle, Atascosa, Texas. Elizabeth was buried first at the Devine Evergreen Cemetery, where a memorial still stands in her honor. (It is the belief of her descendants that the numbers designating her date of birth were transposed at the time this memorial was carved. Elizabeth’s casket was moved from Devine to Lytle by train in 1900 to be placed by her husband’s side.)

Notes for Elizabeth Eva (Spouse 2)
Elizabeth Hart was born in 1844 on the Hart Plantation, Jackson CO, Fla. She was the mother of John F. Cook’s last fourteen children. She died just nine days after the birth of Grace, having contracted measles during the later weeks of her pregnancy.26
Notes for Elizabeth Eva (Spouse 2)
{“At the time of Grandfather’s death, the members of the family had Grandmother’s casket brought by train from Devine to Lytle to be placed by his side. My mother was married at that time. My Dad and brothers of my mother met the train at the depot in Lytle to receive the casket. My Dad said that casket had a tightly sealed glass cover; grandmother was beautiful and her hair seemed to have grown longer. My Dad and the brothers were leaving to get other members of the family to see her before the second burial. A clumsy, curious person who had no business being there, leaned against the casket, crack the glass -- instant ashes. My Mother said she cried for days, having been denied the privilege of viewing the remains.”26 Mildred Gagdas, daughter of Eve Cook

Notes for Elizabeth Eva (Spouse 2)
Cook Family writer noted that Elizabeth Eva Cook was the daughter of John Cook and Milly Gartman. I have not seen her documentation but do not believe this to be the case.

John Hart and Milley Gartman Hart had a daughter Elizabeth enumerated on the 1850 Census for Covington, AL. She was 6 years old and would have been about the age of Elizabeth Eva Hart. She was born in Florida. The 1860 Census for John Hart’s family shows Martha M. Hart, age 16 born AL. Other researchers have identified this female as Martha Elizabeth Hart, born in AL.

This Elizabeth Hart was listed on the 1850 Census for Covington, AL as 6 yrs old in 1850. She subsequently shows up on the 1860 Census for Hardin Texas as 15 years old with her family John and Milly Hart. She married L. Green Cravey in 1866 but he died in 1867. She married Francis Asbury Looney in 1871 in Hill, Texas.

Elizabeth Eva Hart, dau. of Daniel Hart and Kate McCaskill married John B. F. Cook sometime in 1861-62 in Florida. How could she be on this census in Texas and in Florida the same year. John F. and Elizabeth left Alabama and moved to the state of Texas about 1872-3 settling in Cook CO.

From The Cooks in America by Sherry Nicholas “1860 US Census, Hardin County, Texas, lists Elizabeth with parents John and Milly Hart. Apparently, Elizabeth went back to Alabama to visit family there or was sent back to wed Reverend Cook. Many marriages were arranged in those days. At age 16, Elizabeth was of marriageable age. They were married in 1861-62”

I believe that this conclusion is incorrect:
John and Milly Gartman Hart did have a daughter Margaret Elizabeth born about 1844. However, John’s brother Daniel also had a daughter Elizabeth born about the same time. A document filed by the court in 1926:

#1245
Emory J. Packer, as
Executor of the Estate of A. Hart, deceased
vs.
Adeline Packer, et als.

Bill of Complaint
Filed May 6th, 1927
Marcus Fletcher
Register

The document is three pages and includes a copy of A. Hart’s will. A. Hart was Daniel and John Hart’s brother. In the Bill of Complaint, Emory Packer lists closest of kin to Alexander Hart:

First bequests are to Adaline Packer, sister of John, Daniel and Alexander. Other closest of kin include children of Elizabeth Hart Cook and John B. F. Cook. Also included are other grandchildren of Daniel Hart (bn. 1810).

Information found in other sources but not validated by this researcher find that John and Milly Gartman’s daughter M. Elizabeth married

On the contrary, an original copy of a Bill of Complaint filed May 6, 1927 seems to prove otherwise. The Bill of Complaint was filed by Emory J. Parker, as Executor of the Estate of A. Hart, deceased. Apparently A. Hart died without immediate heirs and the executor identified numerous closest of kin. It appears that A. Hart is Alexander Hart (son of Daniel Hart and Kate McCaskill) The enumeration of closest kin includes the children of Elizabeth Hart and John BF Cook. (Elizabeth died in 1891.) Alexander was a brother of Elizabeth.
