Will of George Powell, of Bertie Co., N.C.

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN
the Twenty fourth day of March 1735-6 I George Powell of Bertie precinct in Albemarle County In the province of North Carolina being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God therefore Calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to Die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul unto the hand of God that gave it and my body. I recommend to the Executors to be buried in Decent Christian burial at the discretion of Executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God as touching such worldly Effects wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with in this life. I give Demise and Dispose of the same in the following manner and form.

In primis I give and bequeath to my son CADER Powell the plantation whereon I live and the land belonging to it as far as the medowy branch above the plantation and so along the said branch to the road by him freely to be possessed and injoyed.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my son GEORGE Powell all my land on the East side of the great branch that runs by the plantation by him freely to be possessed and injoyed.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Lewis Powell all the Land that is on the South Side of the meadowy branch joyning to my Son CADERS line bvy him freely to be possessed and injoyed. Item: I give uto my Son CADER Powell one negro fellow named Jack by him freely to be possessed and injoyed.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my Son GEORGE Powell one negro fellow named Sambo by him freely to be possessed and Injoyed when he shall come of age.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my Son LEWIS Powell one negro wench named Peg by him freely to be Injoyed and possessed when he comes of age.
Item: I give unto my Son MOSES Powell one negro girl named Cate by him freely to be possessed and Injoyed when he comes of age and all my other Estate I give to be Equally Divided amongst all my Children after my debts are paid by them freely Injoyed as they shall come to age Viz. twenty one years. I also constitute make and ordain my Son CADER Powell my sole executor of this my last will and testament confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I shall hereunto set my hand and seal the Day and year above written. Signed Sealed Published and pronounced.

In the Presence of us: William Moore, Charles Horne, Edmund Dod. Berti Prect., May Court 1736. The afore written will of George Powell was proved in Open Court by the Oath of Wm Moore, Charles Horne and Edmund dod the three subscribing witnesses thereto and also Kader Powell who be Exr. therein named took the oath of an Exr. by law required.

JESS IN WYNNS, Clerk? Note; This will was probated at the General Court in Edentown, N.C. where all wills in the province were probated before the Governor prior to 1760.72

First mentioned in the will of his uncle and stepfather, JOHN Powell IN 1687. HIS SON, LEMUEL Powell, is mentioned not only in the will of Thomas Bowles in 1719, but also in the will of WILLIAM Powell NO. 7, dated 1701.63
