Orphans Court Records 1847 - 49, page 218...24 May 1848, Comes Moses Powell and Jonathan H. Peters and petition the Court for Letters of Administration on the Estate of William H. Powell, deceased...and Elizabeth Powell, widow and relict of said deceased, relinquished her right of dower to said estate, so that Letters of Administration can be granted to Moses Powell and Jonathan H. Peters. They are hereby appointed administrators of said Estate. It should be noted that in this record and others to follow, we see for the 1st time a middle initial of “H” given for William Powell. It is not known what it stood for, but it is assumed that possibly it was for Harvey, William possibly being named for his uncle Evan Harvey of Jasper County, Georgia.

May 24, 1848 comes Moses Powell and Jonathan H. Peters, Admnrs. of William H. Powell, deceased and ask for appointment of appraisers of the Estate of said deceased...Court ordered that Seaborn J. Thomas, James Fuller, James Young, James Parham, Griffin Young be appointed as appraisers.

Orphans Court held on 3rd. Monday in October 1849 in the matter of the Estate of William Powell, deceased. Petition for Dower. This is the 15th day of October 1849 came Elizabeth Powell, widow and Relict of William H. Powell late of Tallapoosa County, deceased by her attorney John T. Lettfort, Esq and files her petition as follows in substance to wit: That the said William Powell died seized of the following tracts or parcels of land to wit: East 1/2 of N. E. 14 Township 23, Range 2l and S. E. 1/4, W.S. W. 1/4 Section 2, Township 23, Range 22 in Tallaposa County. Out of the said lands, said she is entitled to Dower and prays that same may be to here according to law and further showing that the named persons are children and heirs of said William H. Powell, to wit: Moses Powell who also is Administrator of the Estate of the deceased; Sarah Lassater; Leroy powell, Susannah Peters, wife of Jonathan J. Peters; Elizabeth Maddux, wife of Benjamin F. Maddux; Permelia Hastings, wife of H. N. Hastings and she and her husband risiding out of this state; Elmina Dendy, wife of James A. Dendy all over he ages of 21 years and William G. Powell, a minor. Whereby it is ordered by the Court that the 2nd Monday in November next be set for a hearing of said Petitioner, and it is further ordered that citation be offered with a cop of said petition to Moses Powell, Administrator of Estate of William H. Powell, deceased. Be it further order that John A? Jordan be appointed as Guardian of William Powell, minor.
