“General James Ewing was born about the year 1736, in Manor township, Lancaster County. His father had emigrated from Ireland at an early day, and settled in Manor township, and when the subject of this notice was but a boy they removed to Hellam Township, York county. At the age of eighteen he was engaged with his accociates in repelling the incursions of the Indians. He served in the campaign under General Braddock, and was a participant in the action near Pittsburg, in which that brave but ill-fated officer was killed and his army routed. James Ewing served his country in the capacity of a brigadier general, attached to the flying camp during the Revolution.

In the character of civilian, he was also a prominent and influential member of society. He was a members of the Legislature for several years, filled many other positions of public trust. He was a man highly esteemed by his fellow citizens, and died in March 1806, aged seventy years.”

CHAPTER VI Mills (“Down by the Old Mill Stream”)

“Brigadier General James Ewing owned a grist, chop and saw mill, built 1790 along Kreutz Creek. An overshot wooden wheel powered its machinery. The mill serviced the community until its new owner, and then Wrightsville Power and Light Company dismantled it i 1925. Other interim owners were Strickler, Phelps and Dodge.

As a Brigadier General of the Pensylvania Militia, James Ewing was a hero of two wars, and commanded under George Washington at the Battle of Trenton. Vice-President of this Commonwealth in 1782, he served several terms in the State Legislature. His guardian was James Wright of Wright’s Ferry, with whom he resided util he reached his majority and marched away at age 19 with General Braddock’s Army, to launch a distinguished career.

James Ewing bornAugust 1736 in Lancaster Co., PA and wrote his Will 13 May 1803, added an undated Codicil, and it was probated 25 March 1806. It is reported he died 1 March 1806. He was a “Gentleman” of Hellam twp. also Brigadier General. His executors were William Barbar and Samuel Bethel. “Grandson James Ewing Mifflin son of deceased daughter and John Mifflin.” They were living in Cecil Co MD in West Nottingham Hundred on 5 January 1805 when James Ewing held a mortgage for 1725 pounds on Lewden’s Reserve containing 145 acres. See Cecil Co., MD Deed Book mort JS Vol 1 page 16 and JS Vol 1 page 20. John Miffline and James Ewing of Hellam twp. York Co. were both called “Gentlemen.” James Ewings Will also mentioned children of half-brother John Connolly and nephew General James Chambers (son of Benjamin Chambers). The Account was filed 10 January 1812 amounting to 3160. 18.4 1/2 pounds. 256
