William Moore to Margaret Patton 4 Aug 1774 signed Daniel Little, her mother Charity Patton writes Daughters of American Colonists have erected a sign on Sand Hill Rd in Buncombe Co., NC "Home place of Captain William H. Moore. Here on land grant #1031, granted in 1787, he erected the first blockhouse-fort of white settlers west of the Blue Ridge. Captain Moore and his troops camped here when on an expedition against Cherekee Indians." The marker was erected by William's great, great, great grandson, Daniel Killian Moore, who served as Governor of North Carolina from 1965-1969.
