Bio notes for Gov Theophilus EATON
Finding himself at odds again, he decided to set sail for America. At the age of forty with his faithful friend Theophilis Eaton and a band of faithful followers they set sail aboard the Hector on the twenty- sixth of June, 1637. This was seventeen years after the settlement of Plymouth and seven years after John Winthrop and John Cotton settled in Boston. John Davenport who was the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony had come from a wealthy family in England, a family who had large land holdings. It is important to understand that John Davenport although, a clergyman, was a man who understood the finer things of life and was very pragmatic in this undertaking. Theophilis Eaton was a man of wealth and was in a position to help significantly finance this trip. When he arrived in New Haven Theophilis Eaton built a sixteen room house!
Notes for Ann (Spouse 1)
Ann Lloyd has two lines of royal descent. Roberts traces her descent from John Lackland, King of England. Browning, calling her Anna Lloyd, traces her descent from Owen Gwynedd, Prince of North Wales. The line to King John is also recorded in "The Genealogists' Magazine" 16:6 and in Francis Jones's "The Princes and Principality of Wales" (1969) p. 33. The latter is regarded as "the best known authority on Welsh pedigrees."
Savage, in his "Genealogical Dictionary", called Ann the "daughter of Thomas Morton, Bishop of Chester, who had kindness for the Puritans." Caroline Sanford had originally entered that in her "Record of My Ancestry". She amended that, saying "Our great Uncle Rev. Isaac Jones of Litchfield thought Thomas Morton was her father, but Thomas Morton was never married. Mrs. Gov. Eaton was the daughter of his predecessor Bishop Lloyd -- so the colonial historians say."
Theophilus and Ann had five children, two sons and three daughters. The second of the children by this marriage died in 1624.
