He enlisted in the 11th Pennsylvania Regiment, became Captain, was taken prisoner in a skirmish on the 27th of October 1776 and exchanged at Elizabethtown, January 3, 1781, went to his home in York, again entered the army, was promoted to be major and server under Lafayette. he served through the war, for which he ws entitled to half pay under Act of Congress, Oct. 21st, 1780. He was appointed Postmaster of Philadelphia by President Washington in 1789, and held the office for nearly twenty years. he removed to New York City, where he died january 3rd, 1814. he was member of Penn. Society of Cincinnati.
