“John F. was farming and teaching the Chapel school then. But he decided to be a minister. His theological training followed with his devoted wife standing by him in all his preparation. She says that John F.’s greatest contribution was his interest in the young people of his churches.”
181“’It would be hard to find a man who commanded a higher respect of all creeds and denominations than the Reverend James B. Smith. He was a man who united sound sense with strong convictions, with a candid and outspoken temper, which eminently fittted him to mold the rude elements of pioneer society into form and consistency, and to raise a higher standard of citizenship in our young and growing state.”

Humphreys, A.J., Wills Point Chronicle, February 20, 1930: A. J. Humphreys, near 60 years of age, died in a Fort Worth hospital last Saturday morning after an illness of about five months, being taken to Fort worth a few weeks ago from his home in Ben Wheeler for special medical treatment by his daughter, Dr. Grace Hood, whose home is in that city.
The remains were brought home and interred in the Prairie Springs Cemetery near Ben Wheeler Monday afternoon, the funeral service being conducted by Rev. Frank Luker of Fort Worth and Rev. Jones of that city, many neighbors and friends attending the last ceremonies.
The deceased was a prominent business man at Ben Wheeler for more than twenty years, moving to that place from Canton. He was a highly respected citizen and is survived by his wife and three children, the daughter mentioned and Mrs. Dewey Shaw and a single daughter Mary Dale Humphries; also a brother, Dr. Drew Humphries of Nocona and perhaps one other brother.
The paper joins many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved.
