Texas Luker
Both my double first cousin, David Luker, son of Benjamin Franklin Luker, and my brother Turner G . Luker of San Antonio, Texas have re- ferred your letter to me. I had my fathers, John Wade Luker, record but one of the family dwel- lings in which the record resided, was burned and was lost. The following account is what I remem- ber of this record.
Our branch of the Luker family was in France, there the name was spelled Luxor, (our family were French Hugeonots). With the Proclamation of the Edict of Nantes, of 1598 in France, giving the Hugeonots equal political rights with the Roman Catholic Church. With the revocation of this Edict in October of 1685, the exercise of the reformed religion in France was forbidden. Chil- dren were to be educated in the Catholic faith. Emigration was prohibited. In spite of this more than 50,000 Hugeonotts made their way to other neighboring countries. The Luxor branch we are descended through went to Holland. In Holland the Luxor name was changed to Lukor.
The family next removed to Wales. From Wales the family removed to New England in America. The colonization in the new world was particiapted in by seven Lukor sons.
In America the spelling of the family name was changed to Luker by some of the descendants. Six of these seven sons were in the wars of the revolution. One son migrated to Alabama and through this particular son we trace our lineage.
My grandfather was James Luker in Tuska- loosa, Alabama. He was descended through the Virginia Lukers.
