Bio notes for Richard Jefferson (Spouse 1)
◦ Name: Richard Jefferson HART
◦ Sex: M
◦ Birth: 5 JUN 1819 in Belleville, Conecuh Co., Al 1 2 3 4 5
◦ Death: in Conecuh Co., Al. 4
◦ Note:The following is from a letter from David Millican dated May 14, 1998. Filed at: Reuben 1998-3.
◦ According to David Millican, Richard moved to Lott, Falls Co, Texas, and died there. Not much is known about him.

◦ The following information comes from David Millican and is filed at: W. H. Hart-1
◦ My William Henry left Covington County around 1843-44. He went to De Soto Parish, Louisiana wher his sister in law, Nancy Herrington and Samuel Buchanan ( first white settler in Conecuh Co according to Riney) had moved earlier. They were there in the 1850 De Soto census but about 1851 they moved to Jefferson County, (later Hardin County) Texas, where he died in 1861. John and his sons Richard Jefferson and William came to Texas about 1856-57. In the 1860 Hardin County census William is living in the household of John, and his wife had apparently died, but he had children Nancy, b 1851 Alabama, Martha, b 1853 Alabama, David and Michael, twins, b 1856 Alabama, and Milly, b 1857 Texas. Richard Jefferson, b 1834 Florida, was living near them. He and his wife Matilda, b 1843 Alabama, had children Mary, b 1857 Texas, and Rebecca, b 1859 Texas.

◦ The following information is from David Millican in a series of e-mails filed at: William H. Hart-1

◦ The Richard Jefferson I mention was, I believe, the son of John, b 1800 who came to Texas at the same time. William Henry also had a Richard Jefferson who married Epsy Bazor. John was married to two Gartman sisters, first Nancy, then Milly. Richard and William were apparently son of he and Nancy. In the 1860 Hardin (County, Texas) census William is called William Hart Jr, and is living in the household of John. He had no wife with him but had kids Nancy, b 1851 Alabama; Martha, b 1853 Alabama; David and Michael, b 1856 Alabama; and Milly, b 1857 in Texas. (This is the source of the arrival date of 1856-57 in Texas). It is a bit puzzling why he is called William Jr. He is listed as born 1829 in Florida.
◦ Richard is 2 pages further and is listed as born 1834 in Florida. John was living in Florida in these periods. This Richard J. was married to Matilda Smith who was the daughter of Eason Smith and Beersheba. Richard J. and Matilda had Mary, b 1857 in Texas; and Rebecca, b 1859 in Texas. As I recall the John Hart family began moving to Covington a short time after 1834. It is worth thinking about to get these kids right. I have always carried them as sons of John's. They definately did not belong to William Henry. He had only one living son in 1860, and he was living in another county at the time. Could these be kids of another Hart brother who came to Texas with John?
◦ There was a William who is on Barbara's branch. Was this William Jr., a son of his? I doubt this, because he would have been at best a somewhat distant cousin of John's, and I don't think a distant cousin would be living with John. Who knows?

◦ The following is a BLM document showing a Cash sale for 39.97 Acres of land in Covington County. Filed at: Land 2001-14.
◦ I believe this to be the correct Richard Jefferson, Son of Reuben.
◦ Accession/Serial #: AL2420___.361, Document #: 20015. Elba Land Office. Cash Sale.
◦ Sept. 1, 1858. NESW Sec. 17/ Twp. 2-N Range 15-E. Meridian: St. Stephens, Alabama. Covington Co., Ala. 39.97 Acres.
